Candidate Spotlight: Annette Begner Is Running For Charleston City Council

Some people are born into the Lowcountry, others are drawn to it. For Annette Begner, it was both a calling and a homecoming of the heart. Though her roots stretch beyond South Carolina, her spirit — defined by faith, family, and fierce determination — fits right in among the people who call James Island home. Now, she’s eager to represent the island she calls home in the Charleston City Council.
Annette’s story is one of boundless perseverance. At just 29 years old, she faced a life-threatening stroke caused by an undetected birth defect — an event that could have cut her story short. Doctors doubted her recovery, but Annette’s faith and grit carried her through. After years of hard work and support from family, she relearned how to walk and talk again, a testament to the efficacy of prayer and reliability of God.
That same determination carried over into her career and community life. Before ever setting foot in South Carolina, Annette was a change-maker. She has served on school boards improving the education of our most precious resource. She earned a mayoral appointment to a police commission and has built multiple successful businesses from the ground up. She’s owned and operated a salon and spa, launched a nationwide event-planning company, and managed corporate and community events across the country — all while raising a family and leaning on her conservative, Christian upbringing.
When Annette and her family made the move to South Carolina, she didn’t just settle in, she became a well-respected member of the community. Within months, she was elected PTA President at Ashley Ridge High School, revitalizing the organization and earning the trust of parents, teachers, and staff. Her work in political and community organizing soon followed, where she served as Fundraising Chairwoman for the Greater Lowcountry Conservative Club and became the go-to planner for major events across the region — including for the Charleston County Republican Party and even national figures from the Presidential cabinet.
Her experience in event management, fundraising, and campaign organization led her to manage a successful campaign that flipped a district — a testament to her ability to lead and deliver results. When the Republican seat for James Island’s City Council opened, Annette’s friends, colleagues, and neighbors urged her to step forward. With just hours left before the filing deadline, she did — not out of ambition, but out of love and a sense of duty toward the community that had welcomed her so warmly.
Today, Annette Begner is running to represent James Island on the Charleston City Council, and she’s doing it with the same resolve that’s defined every previous chapter of her life. She’s an advocate for families, small businesses, and fiscal responsibility. She believes local government not only should serve people, but must. She’s maintained a professional and personable demeaner throughout, despite the fierce rough-and-tumble that is inherent in South Carolina politics these days, proving she’s able to keep her head in the game and ignore distractions to deliver results.
Annette may not have been born in the Lowcountry, but she’s proven, in every way that matters, that she is one of us. For these reasons, we wish Annette Begner the best of luck in her campaign.
